What Specialist Coaches Who Like Feeling Superior Don’t Want You to Know About Mental & Physical Health

Most people think that to deliver outstanding sports and fitness results, you have to cover every area of health and fitness individually. But that’s not true. In fact, specialist coaches who like feeling superior are praying you never see these 3 mental & physical health tips that will supercharge your coaching results in half the time, but here they are:

——

Tip #1: Mental health is not a big scary monster

This tip is important to you because emotional stress will impact everything from your participants’ motivation for the session to their risk of injury. As a non-specialist coach, you don’t need to know the ins and outs of what’s going on in someone’s life to be able to help them. Using simple tricks like changing your language can make a huge difference to someone who’s suffering in silence.

——

Tip #2: Don’t focus on what you don’t know

Too many coaches worry about what they don’t know rather than using the skills they have to be able to help. When it comes to mental health, the fear of opening up a can of worms or getting in over your head is real… and valid, but don’t let that hold you back.

Using your skills with movement can significantly impact someone’s mental health. Simply by challenging your participants to move their bodies in ways they might not have done for a long time adds an element of curiosity, and increasing the social aspect can add a feeling of play to your session.

Both of these are powerful mental health boosters

Tip #3: Keep it simple

If you feel uncomfortable making drastic changes to how you coach, don’t. Introduce one change at a time. Adding a bit of movement to a familiar stretch position can create curiosity when accompanied by the instruction “see where you need to position yourself to make the stretch feel more (or less) intense”.

This ONE simple instruction improves both mental & physical health in these ways:

 – removes the pressure of “getting it right”

 – removes the bad feeling if they don’t feel it where they “should”

 – encourages a sense of curiosity (which is lost when we’re in emotional stress)

 – reconnects people with their own bodies

 – creates a more effective stretch

 – increases someone’s ability to move (which results in better performance)

It will amaze you how much faster you can get things done as a sports or fitness coach just by understanding these 3 mental & physical health tips and how to use them to your advantage.
